New Member Onboarding

Onboarding is an opportunity to bring new members into the vision, systems, and culture of your new home.  Every new member is coming from a unique circumstance from somewhere else in the world and there are things they will need: from wifi passwords to where to park to just meeting a friendly face. This is also a time to seed information about community norms, systems, and any expectations that you would like new folks to consider.

Process

1. On OpenDoor’s end, every new member goes through a call with one of OpenDoor’s staff to review the Onboarding Portal where they will:

  • Receive basic orientation to OpenDoor
  • Read our cultural best practices for coliving
2. The onboarding team member(s) at your community will then have the opportunity to onboard someone in whatever way feels best. There will always be a mix of logistical information and community/cultural information to go through with them. This can be assisted with a digital handbook, printout, or website for them to review information. 
 
It is always great to have in-person time with them either in small group or one-on-one sessions as well as some kind of ritual or event to welcome them into the community. Below is an example from one of our communities of what an oboarding flow can look like:
